Hervanta Campus Packed as Students Kick Off Wappu with Teemunkierros and Traditions

Hundreds of students launched Tampere's May Day celebrations at the Hervanta campus on Tuesday, according to Aamulehti. The Wappu kick-off began at 11:00. Long queues formed for Teemunkierros stamp passes — a challenge that rewards students with patches for their overalls after completing as many events as possible over 18 days. Groups interviewed named Särkän Märkä, the Wapunkaato closing party and the RandomWideoPeliTurnaus at the Game Museum among the top events. Many picked Hervanta or Koskipuisto as the best places to celebrate. Students said the mood was social and communal. Traditions drew crowds: sima (a traditional fermented lemon drink), doughnuts, the capping of the Minna Canth statue, engineering-student baptism ceremonies and Tassuterapia (pet therapy). They also pointed to sits (academic table parties), a 7 a.m. Wappu warm-up and the long line for the student magazine Tampin's release as signs that the city’s student May Day is fully underway.
