Parades, overalls and parties: Tampere welcomes new students Sept 1–3
Tampere's higher education students will begin the academic year with overalls, parades and welcome events across the city from Sept 1–3, including orientation runs, opening ceremonies and campus processions.
Higher education students in Tampere will kick off the academic year with a series of welcome events across the city in the first days of September. The programme brings overalls-clad students, parades and parties to downtown streets from September 1–3, according to Aamulehti.
The week begins on Tuesday, September 1, when Tampere Student Union Trey stages a freshers' orientation run through the city from 15:00 to 21:00. About 1,500 new degree and exchange students are expected to take part. Participants follow one of five routes, visiting short, alcohol-free tasks run by student organisations. Teams compete for prizes for sporting success and best costumes.
On Wednesday at 12:00 Tampere University holds a formal opening ceremony on the downtown campus, with a live stream. Later that night Trey hosts an opening party at Fame Club from 21:00, featuring rap group Mouhous.
That day Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK) marks new students with its traditional Tursajaiset: a Central Square gathering and a procession to the Rosendahl shore where student groups complete association tasks and prizes are awarded. Daytime events are free. The evening continues at Viihdemaailma Ilona with rap duo M//O.
The welcome week wraps on Thursday, September 3, with interfaculty overalls parties organised by Boomi at Viihdemaailma Ilona and H5 Bar & Cellar from 21:00. Advance tickets cost €5 and entry at the door is €6. Students do not need to own overalls to attend.
The events follow traditions from the Hervanta campus and the city's new student guide Hervanta campus traditions, the city’s new student guide. A lively start to the academic year.
