Kangasala field unit to move to Tampere as police close or downsize three stations
Police plan to close or downsize stations in Saarijärvi, Kangasala and Virrat, with Kangasala's field unit due to move to Tampere from spring 2027.
The plan will cut premises and relocate staff in Saarijärvi, Kangasala and Virrat, moving Kangasala's field unit to Tampere from spring 2027. The Central Finland Police Department says the overhaul aims to reduce property costs and streamline operations, Tamperelainen reports.
Under the proposal, Saarijärvi's general policing group would be disbanded and personnel reassigned to Äänekoski and Viitasaari. Kangasala's field group is set to close and most employees will join Tampere's field unit. Changes in Kangasala and Saarijärvi will not take effect before spring 2027. Virrat will see reduced station space, but local services will continue.
Officials say staff relocations have been discussed with employees and the department's cooperation body. The Police Board will monitor any impacts on permit services, and pop-up solutions will be used if necessary. Police chief Mikko Masalin said permit services will continue in the affected towns and that officers will remain visible and carry out their duties despite the reorganisation.
