Fintraffic will close its Turku road traffic control centre at the end of the summer, moving monitoring duties to Helsinki and Tampere.

YLE reports that Fintraffic will close its Turku road traffic control centre at the end of the summer, moving monitoring duties to centres in Helsinki and Tampere. The decision follows change negotiations held at Fintraffic in the spring.

Turku’s centre currently oversees roads in Varsinais-Suomi, Satakunta, Pohjanmaa, Etelä-Pohjanmaa and Keski-Pohjanmaa. Varsinais-Suomi will transfer to Helsinki, while Satakunta, Pohjanmaa and the Southern and Central Ostrobothnia regions will fall under Tampere’s responsibility. Mikko Saariaho, Fintraffic’s head of strategy and communications, said operations will be transferred to the other centres at the end of the summer.

Ten people work at the Turku centre. All ten permanent operational staff were asked whether they would relocate to Helsinki or Tampere; Saariaho said the majority are expected to remain employed and that the reorganisation will not affect road users. The priority, he added, is to guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 nationwide service for customers and stakeholders during the change.
