A century-old wooden house in Vesilahti was destroyed by fire after being struck by lightning shortly before 2 a.m.; the residents escaped without injuries.

Pirkanmaa Rescue Department received a building fire alarm on Lehmustie shortly before 2 a.m. and found the century-old wooden house ablaze after it was struck by lightning. The roughly 200-square-metre family home burned completely through the night. Ten rescue units took part in the operation.

Duty fire chief Sami Lindberg said the residents managed to escape in time and no injuries were reported. Follow-up extinguishing was completed by Sunday morning.

The incident follows other recent lightning-related and overnight house fires in the region, including an earlier lightning strike on the Tampere Orthodox Church that caused a localized tower fire and a night blaze that destroyed a home in nearby Nokia earlier this month. YLE reported the incident.
