Unemployment in Pirkanmaa rose sharply in July to 38,157 jobseekers, with long-term unemployment at 15,203 and vacancies up 4% to 2,474.

A Central Finland Vitality Centre employment review, reported by YLE, found that unemployment in Pirkanmaa rose sharply in July. The review recorded 38,157 jobseekers in July, 5,338 more than a year earlier.

Long-term unemployment is a growing problem. Some 15,203 people had been out of work for more than a year, up 3,425 from last July. And 7,425 had been unemployed for over two years, an increase of 1,879. About 58 percent of the region's unemployed are out of work for structural reasons.

Vacancies rose four percent year-on-year to 2,474, but Pirkanmaa still lags the national average. Tampere had the highest local unemployment rate at 17.1 percent, the seventh highest in Finland. Urjala recorded 15.5 percent, while Pälkäne and Vesilahti had the lowest rates, 8.1 and 8.8 percent respectively.

The rise continues a months-long trend for Pirkanmaa, following a March increase in Tampere unemployment and May's figures showing Pirkanmaa accounted for over a quarter of Finland's unemployment rise.
