Martha Diamond brings Manhattan skylines to Tampere in European debut
Martha Diamond's Manhattan-focused paintings open at the Sara Hildén Art Museum on 19 September 2026 and the exhibition runs until 17 January 2027.
According to the City of Tampere, the exhibition at the Sara Hildén Art Museum opens on 19 September 2026 and runs until 17 January 2027.
It presents a wide selection of Diamond's paintings from the 1970s through her most recent work, accompanied by notes on her process, a video biography and a recording of her 1983 Faculty Lecture at the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture.
Diamond lived and worked for decades in a Bowery studio loft and made the rhythms of skyscrapers, shifting light and urban scale central to her canvases. They are driven by bold brushwork and color and strike a tension between figuration and abstraction.
An illustrated catalogue will include an essay by art historian Kiko Aebi and a text by poet Anne Waldman. The exhibition is organised with the Martha Diamond Trust and the Thaddaeus Ropac gallery.
