Mercury Exceeds Food-Use Limits in Pirkkala Perch Lakes

The lakes tested were Vähäjärvi, Pulkajärvi, Keskisenjärvi, Ylinenjärvi, Sikojärvi and Hahmojärvi, with four of them on the Sikojoen route. Mercury levels in perch from the Sikojoen-route lakes were markedly higher than in Vähäjärvi and Hahmojärvi, and exceeded the 0.50 mg/kg food-use limit in the smaller perch. The water in most study lakes (except Vähäjärvi and Hahmojärvi) was slightly acidic and fairly colored, factors that research has linked to higher mercury in fish.
