Mercury Surges Raise Fishing Restrictions in Pirkkala Lakes

The city’s environmental health service notes that the elevated mercury levels were found in several small lakes along the Sikojoki Route, with the six-lake study by KVVY Tutkimus Oy showing higher-than-average concentrations in Southern Finland. The Pirkkala release emphasizes that perch or pike caught from the lakes along the Sikojoki Route should not be sold or used for food. Environmental health guidance explains that methylmercury forms more readily in low-oxygen conditions and accumulates in organisms, posing risks to fetal development and cardiovascular health. The report also points out that Vähäjärvi shows lower mercury levels on average, making its perch safer to eat, while PFOS-related concerns have previously been detected in Sikojärvi pike and Hahmojärvi fish remains banned from sale or use in food production.
