The National Bureau of Investigation has sought to detain a Tampere-based university researcher born in 1979 on suspicion of an aggravated data breach. A detention hearing is scheduled for Friday at the Pirkanmaa District Court, Aamulehti reports.

A crime report was logged on Monday, 14 September, and the suspect was arrested the following day, police said. The alleged illegal activity stretches from August 2025 to the present, but authorities have not disclosed how it was carried out or which systems or data were targeted. No further details have been released.

The Bureau is seeking detention on probable grounds, a higher standard than reasonable suspicion. "The preliminary investigation is in its early stages, and it is not possible at this stage to provide more detailed information about how events unfolded or related matters. The police are currently investigating the sequence of events and other necessary matters to clarify the case," said Chief Inspector Aku Limnell of the National Bureau of Investigation. Police warned the formal charge may change as the inquiry progresses.
