New Guide Helps 2025–26 Students Navigate Tampere's Transport, Housing and Events

A practical guide for thousands of new students arriving in Tampere for the 2025–2026 academic year offers tips on transport, housing, events, student discounts and mandatory fees (updated 22 August 2025).

The city remains one of the most recommended for under-30 students according to a city survey. The guide was published by Tamperelainen.

Transport advice notes that Nyssen buses run reliably during the day but can be scarce at night, so students should check timetables for late-night travel. Plan ahead. Tram line 3 runs through the night on weekdays to Hervanta, while tram 1 to Kauppi does not. Buy season tickets through the Nella service and consider the cheaper youth ticket for 17–24-year-olds or the student ticket for full‑time students over 17. For route planning, Google Maps may work better than the Nyssen app, which can be slow and does not allow screenshots. Mobile tickets must be validated by placing the phone under the reader so the device can scan the QR code. These tips follow a card-transfer glitch that stalled a Nysse student annual-pass rollout this summer.

For housing, new arrivals are pointed to Toas and Poas for long-term options, with Facebook groups or temporary sublets for short stays; Telegram is the main messaging platform for student associations. Events listed include recurring student overall parties at Ilona, Kolmiot nights at Sin City and H5 (the first Kolmiot on 20 August), city-wide pub crawls such as the Hämeenkatu appros, Kiskofest in early September, and the Särkänmäki student event at Vappu.

The guide warns about ticket resales and advises dealing only with sellers who accept MobilePay or selling physical tickets in person. It also reminds students to use the Kela-subsidised student lunch priced at €3.10, consider Sportun membership for cheap sports access, and pay the student union and Kela health fee (to access YTHS services) by mid-November. Above all, students are reminded to be patient: settling in takes time and it is okay if university life does not immediately feel like the best time of your life.
