According to the City of Tampere, a nationwide Taloustutkimus survey in February–March 2026 found Tampere remains Finland's most recommended city for people under 30 considering where to study, covering both those with and without direct experience of the city. Respondents who know Tampere gave it an overall score of nine on a school-grade scale, citing location and reputation as the main reasons they would recommend it. Reliable public transport, a lively city centre and the city's manageable size were also frequently mentioned.
Mayor Ilmari Nurminen welcomed the result, saying the city’s long-term work to combine functional services with vibrant urban culture is paying off. "Tampere is a good place for young people to live and study," he said.
Since 2023 the city has steered student-city development through its "Top in Student-Friendliness" action programme. On 1 June 2026 the city board approved an updated 2026–2029 programme prepared with student organisations.
The renewed programme centres on two projects: one to strengthen students' ties to working life and smooth the transition to employment; the other to boost collaboration on student events, including integrating them into Tampere Day and the city's 250th anniversary.
Saara Ahola, chair of the Tampere University of Applied Sciences student union, said building work contacts during studies is vital. Tami Nordström, chair of the Tampere Student Union, said the events project will make it easier to hold student activities in public spaces.
