New Vastavirta Documentary Traces Pispala's DIY Spirit

The project began as a short birthday video for the club but grew into a full-length 70-minute film created by Joona Virtanen, Anneka Prusti, and Pääsky Laakso. It foregrounds the community, solidarity and DIY ethos that define Vastavirta and portrays how the club connects with broader Pispala culture and events—from folk gigs to carnival events and festivals around the district. Prusti notes that Vastavirta is not merely a punk venue but a space open to many kinds of activities, and Laakso adds that the place has an open attitude toward nearly anything the community wants to try. Virtanen emphasizes that the club’s ideals have become deeply rooted in its audience, and new leadership would need to align with those values. The film shows how Vastavirta’s culture of cooperation sustains a wider network of Pispala happenings, with the club’s audio gear moving between Pispala Folki, Karnevaalit, Jazz, May Day and Saunafestivaale for different events. It includes interviews with founders and attendees who describe communal work and reuse as central pillars, and even features a cameo from musician Dave Lindholm who calls such places “dives” loved by locals. The creators discuss the documentary’s scope, acknowledging it isn’t a demolition of the club but a reflection of its enduring principles. The premiere is on Wednesday, March 4 at Niagara at 20:00, with a second screening at Koskikeskus Cine Atlas on Saturday, March 7 at 21:30; the 70-minute film is part of Tampere Film Festival. The Vastavirta team members also perform as a band on the club’s stages, underscoring the venue’s role as a creative hub.
