Niemenranta to receive most of Tampere’s 150–200 new small-boat berths

Tampere will add roughly 150–200 small-boat berths over the next two years, mainly at Niemenranta, city officials told YLE.

The city already manages more than 7,000 pier and rowing-boat spots across Tampere. Demand is strongest for berths close to the city centre and new residential areas. Tuomas Salovaara, the city’s harbour manager, said people value berths that are reachable by public transport or close to new housing and the city aims to meet that demand. Naistenlahti’s berths will not increase while that harbour is under renovation, and Mustanlahti lost its small-boat spots because of bridge works.

A floating breakwater is scheduled to arrive at Mustanlahti by the end of May. Another breakwater with berths is planned at the corner between Pajasaaren and Mustanlahti. On the Niemenranta side, Halkoniemi already has a new concrete main pier; two side piers are due next summer. The main pier will be open year-round, and the new harbour is expected to add about 150 berths.

Salovaara said concerns about water levels after a low-snow winter are understandable, but the lake is at a normal level for this time of year and channel markers ensure safe navigation depths.
