Nine Tampere residents tell young people to keep hobbies, study and trust themselves
Nine people interviewed in Tampere city centre told young people to keep hobbies, study and trust themselves as the city expands youth support measures.
Tamperelainen asked nine people in Tampere city centre for life advice for young people; many stressed hobbies, studying and self-trust. The responses come amid city efforts to support young people, including the 'Listen to Youth' campaign launched after a survey found one in three pupils hesitate to confide and the city's youth wellbeing ecosystem for 18–28-year-olds set up earlier this year.
"Take care of each other and yourselves. It's not easy to be young in these times," one respondent said. Eighty-six-year-old Sinikka Solava said she regrets not obeying her mother as a teenager and urged young people to "definitely obey and respect your parents." Esa Helminen, 68, advised taking things calmly and trusting that problems will work out. His wife Teresia encouraged a positive mindset and belief in one's own abilities.
Several people offered practical tips. Erkki J. Anttila, 67, recommended studying and working, while Ilkka Alavalkama, 75, said, "get a good hobby." Satu Rautio and Tuula Kesmala urged young people to study and care for others. Nonagenarian Anja Gummerus advised following your inner pull when choosing a path, and Elisa Salonen, 70, warned that the world can be cruel and suggested finding one thing to believe in and hold on to.
