Oras Tynkkynen has announced he will run in next year’s parliamentary elections in Pirkanmaa and urged the Greens to target two or three seats in the region.

Tamperelainen reports that Oras Tynkkynen, 48, has announced he will run in next year’s parliamentary elections in Pirkanmaa. A seasoned Green politician and chair of the Greens’ parliamentary group, he framed the decision as a serious commitment driven by personal readiness and public responsibility.

Tynkkynen served four terms as an MP from 2004 to 2015 and returned to parliament in 2023 after working at Sitra as a senior adviser and running his own business. He urged the Greens to aim to win at least two, possibly three, seats in Pirkanmaa — the region currently has only his seat, he told Tamperelainen.

He warned that “many indicators are pointing in the wrong direction” on the economy, employment, climate and the future of the welfare state, and argued against cuts to core services. Rather than trimming services, he proposes reducing inefficient corporate subsidies and raising taxes aimed at harms and environmental damage — on mining, waste and fuels — and introducing a tiered air-travel tax. He also wants to expand support measures to tackle unemployment and boost green investments.

Tynkkynen highlighted a potential green-transition investment pipeline worth over €300 billion as a source of jobs, growth and emission cuts.
