Aamulehti warns that Prime Minister Petteri Orpo's Garden state aid decision could make it politically impossible for the state to support large Finnish arenas in coming years, despite examples like Tampere's Nokia Arena showing wider local benefits.

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo's controversial Garden funding decision in spring 2025 could make it politically impossible for the state to back large Finnish arenas in coming years, Aamulehti warns.

The uproar over Garden has weakened the case for public support, precisely when examples like Tampere's Nokia Arena highlight why such backing can be justified. Nokia Arena has been operationally profitable. Yet heavy debt forced owners, including the city of Tampere, to convert tens of millions of euros in loans into equity. The state also supported the project with an €18 million contribution, and much of the arena's wider economic benefit flows to hotels, restaurants, transport and local businesses rather than to the arena company itself.

Critics say the real problem with the Garden decision was not the use of public money but the government's failure to compare the project openly with rivals before granting a conditional €35 million state aid package at a mid-2025 meeting. When plans for Vantaan Arena 3.3 gained momentum in June 2026, a direct comparison emerged and criticism intensified. Fear of political backlash could push officials to withdraw from financing major venues, even though such projects can produce broad local and national gains.

The controversy follows earlier reporting that Orpo's comparison to Nokia Arena has already backfired Orpo's Nokia Arena comparison backfired.
