Tampere will introduce the Mielenpolku mental wellbeing model across its upper secondary schools this autumn, aiming to make student wellbeing work more visible and systematic through training, peer support and community activities.

Developed with Pirkanmaa wellbeing services and MIELI ry, the Mielenpolku model builds on wellbeing and interaction goals in the national upper secondary curriculum. It aims to make mental wellbeing work more visible and systematic across teaching, leadership and student communities.

Deputy Mayor Jaakko Mustakallio called Mielenpolku the next step in Tampere’s long-standing efforts to strengthen upper secondary education. He said adding a mental wellbeing perspective to pedagogy, leadership and community development should improve outcomes. Training for principals began in June 2026.

The programme includes group-building, communal events, clubs, peer support and study-skills guidance, with special attention to first-year students. MIELI ry’s children and youth unit helped design the model and provided expert lectures and training. Satu Raappana of MIELI said she hopes Tampere’s example will inspire other municipalities.

The programme builds on Tampere's broader youth wellbeing work, including the city's cross-sector Youth Wellbeing Promotion Ecosystem and the 'Listen to Youth' campaign launched in August.
