Pirkanmaa MPs Propose Municipal Funding to Kickstart Tampere–Turku Rail Upgrade

Sixteen Pirkanmaa MPs have proposed starting planning immediately for the Tampere–Turku passenger rail connection without waiting for state funding. Their move echoes an earlier appeal by a Southwest Finland parliamentary group to open talks on a Tampere–Turku–Naantali rail link the earlier Southwest Finland appeal and comes as Traficom has set a September deadline for regions to decide on trainset commitments for 2031 services the Traficom deadline.

The MPs argue the upgrade is vital for regional accessibility, commuting and local businesses, and they want service-level options evaluated as part of passenger rail procurement preparations. A regional preparatory group concluded the project's first phase could be implemented without major track investments; the only identified infrastructure need is construction of new stops. Those stops could be financed largely or entirely without state money if preliminary negotiations begin. The MPs say a municipally funded solution would signal the region's development priorities, and they have asked the Ministry of Transport and Communications to launch service-level planning, infrastructure talks and a market dialogue on implementation possibilities.
