A zoning change on Multiojankatu could nearly double the street’s population to about 460 by replacing 1970s blocks with new multi-storey and terraced housing; the plan now moves toward the city council.

A zoning change on Multiojankatu in the Multisilta district could double the street’s population, creating homes for about 460 people instead of the current 213, Tamperelainen reports.

The city’s community committee has recommended the draft plan to the city board, which will pass it to the city council for a final decision once implementation agreements are approved. Construction would be phased.

Under the proposal, 1970s apartment blocks would be replaced by new multi-storey and terraced housing. Parking areas would be upgraded, and green spaces and outdoor recreation opportunities would be preserved. Residents highlighted those points at public meetings, which led to changes such as named walking and cycling routes and additional protected trees on the zoning map.

Planners have also adjusted the plan to account for local nature values, including wood-decay moss and corridors used by flying squirrels, and the neighbourhood’s streetscape would be reshaped gradually if the council signs off on the project.
