Tampere plans about 400 homes as Lukonmäki student blocks set for demolition

Tampere will replace dilapidated student blocks east of Turtolankatu in Lukonmäki with new apartment buildings and five single-family plots, creating housing for about 400 people, Tamperelainen reports. The city board will discuss the zoning change at its first autumn meeting next Monday.

The plan calls for tearing down existing two- to three-storey student housing. New four- to six-storey apartment blocks would be built along Turtolankatu, and about a quarter of the units would be reserved as student apartments.

Bicycle shelters and green-roofed carports will be positioned to shield yards from traffic noise, with parking hidden from the street, designers say. Each detached plot would be about 500 square metres, matching neighbouring lots. A new pedestrian and cycle connection would run between the blocks.

Planners have considered a noise embankment or fence in the protected green area and assessed impacts on bat and flying squirrel habitat as well as the wider cityscape. It fits the city's wider push to add thousands of new homes as part of plans for up to 60,000 more residents by 2040 city planning documents have said and adds to Tampere's recent drive to create new single-family plots announced earlier this year.
