Pyynikki launches English-language upper secondary programme for 27 international students

Pyynikki Upper Secondary School has launched an English-language upper secondary programme this autumn, enrolling 27 students from several countries. Students will study in English while developing Finnish and preparing for the Finnish as a Second Language and Literature matriculation exam.

The stream is aimed at young people whose Finnish is not yet strong enough for Finnish-language upper secondary studies. Participants study Finnish as a second language and will sit the Finnish as a Second Language and Literature matriculation exam. Many entrants are new to the Finnish education system. Some come from Finnish families who lived abroad and are attending Finnish upper secondary school for the first time.

Students and staff say the programme brings mutual benefits. Amanda Elizaga from the Philippines appreciates the more relaxed Finnish school atmosphere after moving to Tampere in 2023. Form tutor Christopher Smith notes that studying in English allows diverse cultural perspectives to enrich classroom work. Coordinator Samu Virpimaa says interest has been strong and inquiries continue; he adds the English stream complements the school's bilingual programme and aims to boost Tampere's appeal for returnees and international families.

Applicants who have completed up to three years of basic education in Finland are eligible. Non-EU/EEA applicants must hold a residence permit for reasons other than study. Applications are handled through the joint application system.
