A six-part lecture series on the world’s major rivers opens at Tampere’s Sampola on 3 September and runs on six Thursdays through November, with talks by local scholars on rivers from the Nile to the Danube.

The new six-part series opens at Sampola on Thursday 3 September 2026 and runs on six Thursdays through November, bringing scholars to Tampere to trace how major waterways shaped economies, transport and culture.

The programme opens with Jaakkojuhani Peltonen on the Nile on 3 September. Markku Henriksson will discuss the Mississippi on 17 September, and Juha Rajala speaks on the Yangtze on 1 October. Peltonen returns on 22 October to cover the Euphrates and Tigris. Mirja Rekola talks about the Amazon on 5 November, and Rajala closes the series with a talk on the Danube on 19 November.

The talks are free, require no advance registration and take place in the Sampola auditorium on Thursdays from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. They will not be streamed.

Kristiina Kestinen, the series coordinator, says riverbanks and deltas have long provided fertile soils and habitats that enabled rich human cultures. She also raises questions about the future impact of human activity on these waterways.

Sampola's auditorium is on the building's second floor, with elevator access and designated wheelchair spaces to ensure accessibility for attendees. The City of Tampere provided the event details.
