Tamperelainen reports seven drownings in Pirkanmaa this June–August, down from 12 the year before; nationwide the Finnish Swimming Teaching and Lifesaving Federation recorded 46 drownings this summer.

Tamperelainen reports that preliminary data compiled by the Finnish Swimming Teaching and Lifesaving Federation (SUH) show seven drownings in Pirkanmaa during June–August, down from 12 the previous year.

SUH recorded 46 drownings across Finland this summer, one more than last year and below the ten-year average of 51. Authorities also logged more than 100 near-miss incidents, about a third fewer than the year before.

Anne Hiltunen, a water safety expert with the federation, said many of the close calls could have been prevented by anticipating risks. The federation urges people to wear life jackets on the water, supervise children closely, assess personal skills realistically and avoid alcohol.

Summer incidents included capsized boats, canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards, as well as falls from boats, piers or shores. Searches were also triggered by clothes and belongings left on beaches.

The deaths follow other recent water tragedies in the region, including two divers who died in Mallasvesi in March.
