Tampere’s plans for a roughly 400-hectare Kauppi–Niihama nature reserve advanced after a full-house public meeting on 6 October, with a draft management plan and a public consultation on the detailed boundary planned for spring 2027.

Plans to establish a roughly 400-hectare Kauppi–Niihama nature reserve in Tampere moved forward after a full-house public meeting at Vapriikki Museum Centre on 6 October. The proposal had been included in the city's nature protection programme earlier announcement, and the meeting was publicised in advance as a Vapriikki public meeting.

Planners outlined preparation work, presenting a draft management and use plan and development themes for recreation, sports, transport and accessibility. Attendees pressed for stronger protection of the area's natural values. They also called for safe, smooth connections and for the area's varied recreational options to be preserved.

Only land owned or administered by the city is included. Soukonvuori's existing 45-hectare protected area lies inside the proposed boundary but will retain its separate protection rules. Ski tracks are preliminarily excluded from the reserve, while mountain bike and hiking routes would fall within the proposed zone.

The municipality will carry out surveys of the area's natural state, plan restoration measures and draft protection regulations to define allowed activities and safeguard habitats. A detailed boundary and draft plan will be published for online comment in spring 2027. Feedback gathered at the meeting informed issues from Luhtaantie walking and cycling links and lighting to Atala underpass safety, Niihama cabin development, parking and public transport near Kauppi Sport Center, dog-walking rules and accessible trail services.

A targeted stakeholder meeting is planned for late 2026. Construction of trails and resting places is due to begin in 2027, and city officials say they will continue to use public input to shape a sustainable, multifunctional Kauppi–Niihama for everyone.
