Parents across the Tampere region are being asked in a Wilma survey to choose between 9 and 11 August 2027 as the school start date, with the questionnaire also asking about Christmas and Easter holiday timing.

Aamulehti reports that parents across the Tampere city region are being asked to state their preferred start date for the 2027–2028 school year in a Wilma survey that runs until 6 September. The questionnaire also asks for views on the timing of the Christmas and Easter holidays.

The survey follows heavy feedback after this year’s schools began on 6 August, a decision that prompted many guardians to question the rationale. Launched on 24 August, it offers two proposed start dates for August 2027, 9 or 11 August, and includes both preset options and a free-text field for other suggestions. Parents can explain their choice in the free-text box. Responses will help decide whether the region changes the school and holiday rhythm for 2027–2028.

Participating municipalities are Kangasala, Lempäälä, Nokia, Orivesi, Pirkkala, Tampere, Vesilahti and Ylöjärvi. Ulla Ojalammi, Tampere’s head of basic education, told Aamulehti that many parents wanted an explanation for the early August start; officials have said it allows a three-week Christmas break, though some parents said a longer Christmas holiday can be harder to arrange for families. If schedules remain unchanged, schools in the region will start on Monday 9 August next year.

The consultation takes place amid a broader debate over holiday timing, including a recent national proposal to delay summer holidays and add an April break earlier national proposal on holiday timing. It also follows Tampere’s basic-education changes approved in June that take effect in August 2026 city curriculum changes in June.
