Tampere Parents Prefer Later August Start and Shorter Christmas Break
A Tampere city survey of 8,909 guardians found most parents want the school year to start after mid‑August and prefer a shorter, 2–2.5 week Christmas break.
An early-autumn city survey of 8,909 guardians across the Tampere region, including 4,528 from Tampere, found most parents want the school year to begin after mid-August and favour a shorter Christmas break of about 2–2.5 weeks.
This autumn, Tampere schools began on August 6 and the Christmas holiday lasted three weeks. Much of Finland, by contrast, started term on August 12 or 13. The early August start prompted complaints this year, even though the same August 6 date drew little feedback last year. Respondents said a long Christmas break does not suit family plans and that arranging time off around Christmas is harder than in summer.
Ulla Ojalammi, Tampere’s director of basic education, said several parents had noted that it is dark during the Christmas holiday and they would rather extend summer. She told YLE the survey results will be used in preparatory work, but no final decision on changing school term dates has been made. The results follow an earlier Wilma survey asking Tampere-area parents to choose between 9 and 11 August for the 2027 school start.
