Tampere Art Tram Debuts Giant Yellow Duck Wrap
Maya Hahto's duck‑themed wrap Ankkaratikka will cover the Tampere art tram for one year starting 19 May after finishing second in an open public vote.
Maya Hahto's new work Ankkaratikka — a bright yellow, duck‑themed wrap with tiny webbed footprints — will cover the Tampere art tram for one year from 19 May, the tram operator said.
Hahto, an illustrator and visual artist known for sci‑fi, fantasy and horror themes, said she wanted the piece to lift spirits. "I hope my work brings cheer in any weather. The yellow ducks stay cheerful even in winter slush," she said. The idea grew from sticker designs and a wish to pick a colour that pops against the city's backgrounds.
The design was chosen through an open competition that drew 347 proposals. A jury picked 16 finalists for a public vote; three proposals received the most votes and will be produced. Hahto finished second with 9,738 votes. Ilai Elias Lehto's Morottavat metsäneläimet, on the tram since summer 2025, will be replaced by Ankkaratikka; Ilmo Pihkala's Pilviä is scheduled for summer 2027.
Surprised and pleased by the vote totals, Hahto — who no longer lives in Tampere — said she intends to ride the tram as soon as possible to see the full‑scale installation; at 37.3 metres, it is the largest single work she has made.
The art tram programme is run by Tampereen Raitiotie Oy in cooperation with Pirkanmaan festivaalit ry. The company stages pop‑up performances aboard the tram several times a year. The spring 2026 programme includes a Lapsikuoro Tactus children's choir performance on 20 May and poetry sessions by the Viitapiiri group on 9 and 11 June, among other acts.
