Tampere City Council to pick temporary deputy mayor as Mustakallio begins parental leave

According to Aamulehti, Tampere City Council will choose a substitute for deputy mayor Jaakko Mustakallio, who is on parental leave, at its Monday, March 16 meeting; Aamulehti will livestream the session. The Greens have nominated Johanna Kirjavainen for the temporary post. Most of the meeting is taken up by citizens' motions, including a renewed proposal to protect the freshwater pearl mussel after concerns that Tampereen Vesi's groundwater intake has affected the species' habitat; the council previously sent that matter back for more preparation in May 2025. Other items include protecting Pispala's built heritage, expanding the Kintulampi nature reserve, distributing seasonal flowers to residents, and securing children's school routes in Järvensivu following the closure of the Sairaalakatu office.
