Tampere will reduce red meat in daycare, school and upper-secondary meals and increase plant proteins, fish and chicken while cutting food waste as part of the city’s biodiversity and carbon-neutrality programmes.

According to Tamperelainen, Tampere will reduce red-meat meals in daycares, schools and upper-secondary institutions to cut emissions and support biodiversity. Pirkanmaan Voimia Oy will increase the use of plant proteins, fish and chicken across the city’s meal services while reducing red meat. It will introduce measures to shrink food waste for all customer groups and teach responsible eating habits at every school level. The changes form part of Tampere’s Biodiversity (LUMO) and Carbon Neutral Tampere 2030 programmes. They are also tied to a broader collaboration between Finland’s largest cities and the food industry. This follows the Finnish cities' biodiversity collaboration and builds on Tampere’s earlier work to cut preschool meal waste after integrating attendance and meal-ordering systems. That integration avoided tens of thousands of unnecessary lunches and saved more than €171,000 through reduced meal waste. City officials say procurement and everyday food choices can influence both local nature and global greenhouse gas emissions.
