Tampere Extends Three Tram Platforms to Accommodate 47‑Metre Trams
Tampereen Raitiotie Oy says platforms at Koskipuisto, Tulli and Hervantakeskus have been extended to accommodate 47‑metre trams, with Hervantakeskus work completed on 30 October 2026.
Tampereen Raitiotie Oy says tram stop extensions at Koskipuisto, Tulli and Hervantakeskus are complete, with work at Hervantakeskus finished on 30 October 2026. The completion follows earlier bidding to extend three stops and the scheduled Hervantakeskus works that began in September Hervantakeskus extension schedule.
Tampereen Raitiotie Oy said the extensions were coordinated with the introduction of 47‑metre vehicles. "The stop extension work and the deployment of the long vehicle have been carried out simultaneously and the work has been coordinated diligently along the way. Our aim has been to offer passengers a comfortable travel experience at all tram stops also when operating with the long vehicle," said track manager Antti Uotila.
Koskipuisto's platform was extended eastward toward the railway station, which led to the removal of a pedestrian crossing across Hämeenkatu from the west side of Pellavatehtaankatu. Passengers can still access the platform via ramps at the western end and steps at the eastern end. The Pellavatehtaankatu carriageway was shifted about one metre east at Hämeenkatu.
The Tulli platform was lengthened westward toward the city centre. South-side access, on the Attila building side, is by stairs or a ramp to preserve step-free entry, while east-side access is via ramp. A sidewalk along Itsenäisyydenkatu runs behind the platform area.
Hervantakeskus was extended to the south toward Hervantajärvi. The northern crossing has been converted into a pedestrian crossing that also spans the track, and tactile paving now guides access from the north. The southern crossing was moved slightly south and is now a continuous pedestrian crossing. Driveway access to properties west of Insinöörinkatu remains, although vehicle alignment has been shifted a little to the south.
Tampereen Raitiotie Oy has ordered seven new 47‑metre trams, with the first expected in early summer 2027 and deliveries running through the end of 2027. Existing vehicles will also be lengthened with 10‑metre add‑on modules; eleven modules have been ordered in addition to a prototype, with deliveries starting at the end of this year and continuing into summer 2028. Longer trams will enter passenger service as they receive technical approval. The aim is to have 19 lengthened and 16 current‑length vehicles in place by the planned opening of the Pirkkala–Linnainmaa line section in August 2028.
