Tampere launches Active Travel Week to boost walking, cycling and cut transport emissions
Active Travel Week encourages short trips on foot and by bike to promote wellbeing and help Tampere cut transport emissions as the city aims for 69% sustainable travel by 2030.
The City of Tampere says Active Travel Week encourages short trips on foot or by bike to support wellbeing and help the city meet its climate targets. The campaign builds on recent investments: Tampere placed 45th in the 2025 Copenhagenize Global Cycling Index the city's May cycling report and state grants announced this summer will fund walking and cycling projects the June funding round.
The city aims to increase the share of sustainable travel modes to 69 percent by 2030, and says reducing transport emissions is crucial to reaching that goal.
Elina Pulliainen from the climate policy and environmental protection unit invited workplaces, hobby groups, families and neighbours to organise local events. Climate and environment manager Hannu Niukkanen said small actions add up, and that if every resident left their car at home once a week Tampere could reach carbon neutrality by 2030.
Staff at the Ikuri Myllypuro daycare said the "Give the car a day off" challenge is already popular, with some employees cycling just 300 metres to work and others riding six or seven kilometres.
