Tampere Nurse Launches 'Get Rid of Extreme Breed Traits' Campaign to Curb Harmful Pedigree Features
A Tampere clinical veterinary nurse has launched a citizens' initiative to ban extreme pedigree traits she says cause serious health problems in animals.
Kaisa Lehtola, a clinical veterinary nurse, launched a citizens' initiative this spring to eliminate extreme pedigree traits that she says cause serious health problems for animals, Tamperelainen reported. The campaign, called Get Rid of Extreme Breed Traits, targets exaggerated physical features in certain pedigreed animals.
Advocates say those features often lead to chronic illness and a lower quality of life. Lehtola says she once suffered from "breed blindness", admitting she had previously overlooked how breed aesthetics can harm animal welfare. Now she is pushing for change.
The campaign has intensified local debate about animal welfare. Earlier this year a Tampere councillor proposed closing the nearly 90-year-old bird enclosures in Sorsapuisto over welfare concerns the councillor's proposal to close Sorsapuisto's bird enclosures.
