Tampere presses ahead with Iidesjärvi park plan despite wildlife concerns

Tampere plans to convert the shoreline of Iidesjärvi into a recreational park with a nature-themed playground, fitness area, picnic and campfire sites, and a new bird tower, according to YLE. The proposal covers land just two kilometres from the city centre and has reignited a long-running local dispute.

Members of the Pro Iidesjärvi group, led by activist Marika Mast, say converting the marshy, bird-rich shore into a "people park" would destroy the area's natural values. Birdwatcher Kari Tuomiranta and resident Mirja Muurinen joined Mast, arguing that thickets, thistles and brambles provide shelter and food for many bird species and that the shoreline supports protected amphibians. Deputy mayor Ilkka Porttikivi, who originally campaigned against a larger family park, now supports the scaled-back plan. He says, "This plan will even increase the area's biodiversity" and that the scheme restores much of the habitat.

The zoning process began six years ago and the urban development committee approved the plan in June despite about 60 formal objections filed during the public display period. The city shifted to a nature-first draft that removed the planned dog park and landfill remediation and dropped several controversial elements earlier in June, and the community committee approved partial zoning for the south shore on 9 June in a separate vote. The full package would cost roughly €8.6 million. Porttikivi stresses that approving the zoning and park design is not yet an investment decision and that final sign-off rests with the city council.
