Tampere plans to remove about 600 cubic metres of contaminated sediment from a 100-metre stretch of Viinikanoja, with work scheduled for winter 2026–2027 or summer 2027.

About 600 cubic metres of contaminated sediment will be excavated from a roughly 100-metre stretch of Viinikanoja, covering around 900 square metres. Work is scheduled for winter 2026–2027 or summer 2027.

Samples show the sediment contains about 28 kilograms of PCB compounds, along with PAHs and oil hydrocarbons. After excavation, the channel will be backfilled with clean soil.

The operation aims to stop pollutants reaching Pyhäjärvi, cut long-term ecological harm and improve recreation, fishing and nature values in Viinikanoja and Viinikanlahti.

Contractors will work during low-flow periods using containment and water-treatment systems. Water and sediment monitoring will follow. The cleanup is expected to take one to two months and will be carried out in accordance with the zoning plan.

The site sits within Tampere’s national urban park and along main cycling routes. The nearest housing is about 25 metres from the work area.

The cleanup follows the phased demolition at the Viinikanlahti wastewater plant and the broader Viinikanlahti redevelopment that began in spring 2026, Tamperelainen reported.
