Phased Demolition Underway at Viinikanlahti Wastewater Plant; Work Runs Through 2027
Phased demolition of Tampere’s Viinikanlahti wastewater treatment plant has begun, with early buildings already removed and work scheduled to continue through the end of 2027.
Staged demolition of the Viinikanlahti wastewater treatment plant in Tampere has begun, with initial buildings at the site's northern end already taken down. Tampereen Vesi Oy says work will continue until the end of 2027.
The first structures to be removed include the large circular digesters along Hatanpään valtatie, a familiar landmark on the city skyline. The work is phased because the site contains many different structures and material types.
Demolition will produce a variety of materials destined for further processing, and residents should expect intermittent increases in truck traffic. Activity is scheduled on weekdays between 07:00 and 20:00 and will cause occasional noise for nearby neighbourhoods. The company says local neighbours have been notified.
Ahosen Palvelut Oy is executing the demolition contract for Tampereen Vesi Oy, while the property owner, the City of Tampere, will oversee future redevelopment of the Hatanpään ranta area. The plant has operated at Viinikanlahti since 1972. Its removal will significantly alter the riverside landscape and make room for new construction.
