Tampere to Replant Yliopistonrinne After 140 Trees Cleared for New Tunnel
About 140 trees were removed from the Yliopistonrinne slope this spring; the city plans to replant native trees and shrubs once tunnel and street works are finished.
Residents cried "All vegetation was cut down to the millimetre" when crews cleared the Yliopistonrinne slopes this spring, the local paper Tamperelainen reported. Roughly 140 trees were removed from the Viinikankatu hillside as work began on the new Yliopistontunneli link to P-Hämppi. The work follows the tunnel project's May start on Viinikankatu.
Tampere plans to landscape the slopes and restore vegetation once tunnel and street works reach their final phase between Ratapihankatu and Kalevantie. Planting will be phased with construction: trees and shrubs will be placed in naturalistic, terraced groups on the steep inclines, and shrubs will be used to stabilise soil and prevent erosion. The initial restoration will favour native species suited to a sun-exposed ridge to boost biodiversity. Exact locations and numbers of new trees will be finalised during detailed construction planning.
Public feedback at a summer exhibition flagged the invasive garden lupin (Lupinus polyphyllus). To avoid reintroducing it, removed topsoil will not be reused as the slope's growing medium.
