Tampereen Raitiotie Oy announced that its Itsenäisyydenkatu tram test runs have concluded successfully on March 2, validating the electrified switch and traffic-signal operation as the Pirkkala–Linnainmaa expansion proceeds. The tests confirm that the new infrastructure can support smooth service along the Independence Street segment and beyond.

Electrification of the switch on Independence Street is designed to ensure tram traffic flows smoothly as the network extends toward Linnainmaa. Trams switch rails when coming from the Hervanta depot toward the east to reach the Kaupin campus and later head toward Ruotula and Linnainmaa, with contingency routing in case of disruptions.

In addition, the intersection traffic lights at Independence Street, Tammela Park Street, and University Street have been adjusted so they no longer switch unnecessarily if the tram does not reach the intersection, removing needless delays for other road users.

The tests were verified during the overnight period between Sunday and Monday, March 1–2, and the switch-control system along with its remote monitoring were confirmed to be functioning properly. Niina Rajakangas, Electrical Chief of Tampereen Raitiotie Oy, stated that the Itsenäisyydenkatu test runs are completed successfully.

The electrification is part of the Pirkkala–Linnainmaa alliance project for Tampereen Raitiotie Oy. The tram extension toward Pirkkala and Linnainmaa remains on schedule, with service planned between Kaupin campus and Ruotula as well as Sorin Square and Partola stops to begin in August 2028.
