Today in Tampere, 33 signatories led by Councillor Lauri Nevanperä of the Green League push a city council initiative to curb nighttime noise from modified vehicles, Tamperelainen reports.

The draft outlines several steps to reduce night noise, including noise measurements, resident surveys, closer cooperation with police, night-time through-traffic bans, legislative influence, and the building of noise barriers.

In a reply prepared with Tampere's environmental protection and traffic planning units, authorities note that nuisance driving is a multi-agency issue with police as the sole direct enforcement authority; a resident survey and ongoing feedback mechanism are viewed as useful, while continuous noise monitoring would be costly. The response adds that any measures would be considered in the five-year noise mitigation plan and reflected in the next plan's development.
