Three Tampere Health Startups Win U.S. FDA 510(k) Clearances

Business Tampere announced that several Tampere-region health technology companies have received U.S. FDA 510(k) clearances this winter. Biomendex was cleared in mid-February, while Inion and Neuro Event Labs received approvals in November.

The FDA's 510(k) process determines whether a medical device is as safe and effective as an existing product. Biomendex secured clearance for its bone substitute technology; Inion, already experienced with the FDA, makes bioabsorbable surgical implants; and Neuro Event Labs’ Nelli system monitors epilepsy patients with automated seizure detection. "This is the first FDA clearance for our product for human use, so it is a major milestone for us," said Biomendex CEO Pasi Kankaanpää.

Kankaanpää said preparatory contacts with the FDA began in December 2024, testing continued through 2025, and final results arrived at the end of the summer before an application was submitted in late autumn. The agency sent several rounds of questions, which Biomendex answered around Christmas and again early this year, and the company received the clearance letter in February.

The approvals reflect a shift in market strategy for many Tampere startups. Kankaanpää pointed out that the United States is dominant for bone substitutes—about two-thirds of the global market is there—and that for some companies the FDA route can now be more straightforward than obtaining a European CE mark. He added that an FDA decision provides strong validation for investors and partners, citing collaborations with clinical centres such as the Mayo Clinic and plans to staff a soon-to-be-active U.S. subsidiary to support commercialisation.

Timo Hänninen, account manager for health companies at Business Tampere, welcomed the news and said the organisation will continue to support companies after clearance. "It is great to see companies from the Tampere region reach the world’s largest market and successfully pass the FDA 510(k) process," he said, noting an export promotion and networking mission to Texas planned for 9–18 March 2026. Finland opened a Consulate General in Houston in July 2025, which Hänninen said also strengthens local ties for market entry.
