A UN International AI and Citiverse Forum and the first ITU‑T Focus Group meeting on AI for Smart Sustainable Cities will take place in Tampere on 10–11 September to push city AI from pilots to citywide scale.

Urban development leaders from cities, governments, businesses and academia will gather in Tampere on 10–11 September for a UN International AI and Citiverse Forum, followed by the first meeting of the ITU‑T Focus Group on AI for Smart Sustainable Cities. The programme aims to move beyond single pilots and address what cities need to deploy AI responsibly and at scale: interoperable systems, international standards and cross‑sector collaboration.

Topics include generative and agentic AI, physical AI, spatial intelligence and digital twins, along with practical lessons for taking Citiverse solutions from trials to citywide impact. The aim is clear: scale, not small experiments.

Deputy Mayor Jaakko Mustakallio says Tampere has become a recognised frontrunner through its pilots, EU research projects and the region’s higher education expertise.

Organisers point to the forum’s role in shaping pre‑standardisation work. The subsequent ITU‑T Focus Group meeting will bring cities, industry, academia and UN bodies together to help ensure AI integrates safely with IoT and digital twin systems.

Seizo Onoe of the ITU said cities are central to delivering technology that genuinely improves everyday life, and Anacláudia Rossbach of UN‑Habitat warned that technological progress must be guided by human dignity, cultural diversity and shared values.

It builds on the city's earlier steps to test and improve AI governance, including the city's June research sparring session with Tampere University.

The ITU‑T Focus Group on AI for Smart Sustainable Cities and Communities (FG‑AI4SSC) is an open working group tasked with advancing safe, scalable AI for IoT platforms and digital twins/smart‑city systems and laying groundwork for future international standards. Tampere is hosting the meeting as part of long‑term Citiverse development and is active in the "Discovering the Citiverse" initiative. The forum is open to all but requires advance registration on the City of Tampere website.

City and UN leaders note the forum underscores cities’ central role in ensuring new technologies deliver better access to housing and services while respecting human dignity and cultural diversity.
