On Thursday 27 August, starting at 9 a.m., 18 Tampere school classes will take part in National Fishing Day at Eteläpuisto. They will learn fish identification and watch handling demonstrations. Pupils will also try shore angling on Pyhäjärvi and can sample fish dishes at a tasting station run by the rural women's association. The event follows plans to build accessible fishing piers at Eteläpuisto to improve shore fishing opportunities, and organisers moved it from May to August to better fit school schedules, Tamperelainen reports.
The event is part of a youth outreach project by Pirkanmaan Kalatalouskeskus to encourage children to fish and boost fish consumption. It is organised with Tampereen 4H-yhdistys and funded by the Eastern Finland Centre for Regional Development from fisheries management fee funds.
