42-metre mobile mast approved for Kohmanpuisto park next to Mediapolis
Tampere's community committee approved an exemption permit for a 42-metre mobile phone mast at Kohmanpuisto beside Mediapolis; authorities say radiation levels will remain well below safety limits.
According to Tamperelainen, the community committee granted an exemption permit on Tuesday, clearing the way for a 42-metre mobile phone mast at the Kohmanpuisto recreation area beside Mediapolis. The mast will include a 16-square-metre equipment room and sit roughly 46 metres from the nearest residence. The site is zoned as a local recreation area, but the permit allows the roughly 100-square-metre installation to proceed. Its colour scheme is planned to blend into the surroundings, and work must follow the approved plans within two years of the decision becoming final.
City officials say the mast will strengthen mobile network coverage and reliability as operators expand capacity. Both the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) and local health protection authorities have judged radiation levels will remain well below safety limits and not pose harmful health effects.
Maintenance visits are expected to be infrequent. Planners say the project should not interfere with radio or TV broadcasts, and that the small footprint will not reduce use of the 40-hectare park or its core recreational functions.
