AI Makes Fake AinoHelmi Job Ads More Convincing and Harder to Trace
AI is making job scams like last October's fake AinoHelmi recruitment page in Tampere more convincing and harder to trace.
Last October jobseekers were asked to attach passport or ID copies to applications for a Tampere restaurant that did not exist, a scheme revealed by the newspaper Tamperelainen. It fooled applicants into handing over sensitive documents. Police praised public vigilance, saying the recruitment site had been created using artificial intelligence more than a year earlier. Investigators from the national unit for cyber-enabled crimes traced the operation to West Africa but could not link identities to the scheme, and they closed the probe about a year ago. Detective Chief Inspector Janne Sievänen warned that rapidly improving AI lowers the technical barrier for scammers. It makes it easier to craft convincing social-engineering narratives and to hide the early steps of multi-stage frauds, including fake security account schemes that can be difficult to trace back to their originator. The incident follows a string of AI-enabled and impersonation scams in the region, echoing earlier police investigations into AITM phishing schemes investigators warned in March and a recent court case involving a large impersonation scam reported in October.
