Cameras Monitor Tampere Eco-Points After Years of Misuse

Rinki says some points have been used to dump items that should be disposed of free of charge at a waste station, and Harri Patana, head of Rinki for Western and Northern Finland, tells YLE that the problem has persisted for years, driving up cleaning and waste-handling costs. Some problem points lie only a few kilometres from Pirkanmaa Waste Management's waste station, Patana notes. The camera surveillance began as a pilot in Vantaa and has expanded to Tampere to identify severe misuse. If needed, Rinki may bill cleaning costs and report rule-breakers to authorities. Still, most users use the eco-points as intended, and Patana thanks those who comply.
