Tampere's draft zoning plan would protect the south shore of Lake Iidesjärvi as a largely natural park, drop a planned dog park and abandon remediation of the old Nekala landfill.

A draft zoning plan would safeguard the south shore of Lake Iidesjärvi as a largely natural park, cancel a planned dog park and abandon remediation of the old Nekala landfill. The proposal was discussed at Tampere's community committee on Tuesday, Tamperelainen reports.

Under the plan, the Iidesjärvi water area and its shores would be designated a nature protection zone. Nekalanranta would become a local recreation area aimed at preserving cultural-historical values and biodiversity. A use and maintenance plan will be prepared to protect significant plant and animal species, and the proposal includes measures to safeguard flying squirrels, bats, moor frogs and bird nesting sites.

The proposal would keep the landfill's tree cover and shoreline intact, with no major earthworks planned, planners say. Environmental effects would be monitored under a follow-up plan. If the community committee approves the proposal, it will go to the city board and then to the council for final consideration.
