Cyclists must yield where pedestrian crossings intersect bike paths
The City of Tampere reminded cyclists during Bike Week that they must yield where pedestrian crossings cross bike paths, and the city will add warning signs at continuous crossings this summer.
“Cyclists must give way where a pedestrian crossing crosses a bike path, slowing or stopping if necessary,” the City of Tampere reminded riders during Bike Week. The rule applies in central locations such as Hatanpää Highway, the Koskipuisto bus stops and the east side of the Rongankatu underpass.
Officials warned that some local traffic arrangements may be unfamiliar to both riders and drivers. These include bike streets where bikes, e-scooters and cars share the carriageway; two-way cycling on streets that are otherwise one-way for motor traffic; and continuous sidewalk-and-cycleway crossings across side streets. Pay attention to signs.
At the continuous crossings on Nekalantie and Hallilantie, drivers entering from a side street must yield to cyclists and pedestrians even if no yield sign is present.
Bike streets and contraflow lanes are marked by signs. The city will add warning signs at the continuous crossings this summer to clarify who must give way. Riders should check local traffic signs and the city’s guidance on the changed cycling rules for details.
