A veteran Tampere bus driver’s Facebook post sparked a heated local debate about children’s and adults’ knowledge of traffic rules after he criticised growing self‑centred behaviour among road users.

A heated Facebook debate has erupted in Tampere over children's and adults' knowledge of traffic rules. The row was sparked by comments from veteran Nysse bus driver Jani Mäki, who said he is puzzled by people’s poor understanding of traffic rules and a growing self‑centred attitude among road users. Tamperelainen asked local Facebook groups for reactions to Mäki’s remarks.

Many commenters echoed his concern, describing children who step onto crossings without looking and who wait on tram tracks. Several participants blamed adult behaviour too, saying pedestrians and cyclists often ignore red lights and use phones while crossing. One commenter even claimed about "85 percent" of adults walk or cycle and set a poor example. Others warned that winter slipperiness will make careless crossings even more dangerous unless adults and guardians pay closer attention.

The debate comes amid ongoing local road‑safety concerns. Mobile speed displays near schools showed high rates of speeding mobile speed displays near schools, and the city reminded cyclists to yield where pedestrian crossings cross bike paths earlier this spring earlier this spring.
