As darkness and rain shorten autumn days, residents are reminded on Reflector Day (1 Oct) to wear and check reflectors and to use bicycle lights.

Reflector Day on October 1 reminds Tampere residents to wear reflectors when moving in dim or dark conditions. Visibility drops quickly in autumn rain and dusk, making it harder for road users to spot one another.

Heljä Aarnikko, the responsible traffic engineer, urged people to pay attention to visibility before the darkest months. Check reflectors regularly. Worn or dirty reflectors lose effectiveness, so consider wearing several on different parts of the body.

Cyclists should test and use lights. Liikenneturva monitoring shows only about half of bicycles have a rear light on, despite its accepted safety benefits. Under the Road Traffic Act, bicycles must use a white front light and a red rear light when it is dark or visibility is otherwise reduced.

The city has installed a public reflector tree next to Laikunlava in the city centre, where people can take or leave reflectors, and is inviting donations from companies and community groups. The installation follows the tree's recent reopening, when the season's first reflectors were put up. The city wishes everyone safe autumn journeys and encourages making a reflector part of daily routines.
