Draft Viinikanlahti art programme, themed on water, goes on display

The draft art programme for the new Viinikanlahti waterfront neighbourhood will be on public display from 2 to 16 November 2026.

The plan aims to make art a visible part of the district’s streets, squares, parks, buildings and blocks, giving Viinikanlahti a distinct identity that ties to its architecture, landscape and everyday urban life. Water is the programme’s overall theme, split into three subthemes: H2O as a chemical compound, nature in its various forms, and people’s relationship with water. Artworks will appear in public outdoor spaces, semi-public courtyards and inside new facilities. Some will be permanent, others temporary.

One of the most prominent pieces is planned for Viinikanlahti square, with the main public artwork to be chosen through an international open competition. Installations are also earmarked for the eastern park area and the Harbour Park. The programme will guide art acquisitions for the planned school, daycare, sports hall and youth facilities; separate implementation plans will consider each building’s architecture, location, use and users.

Drafting began in October 2025. The draft is available on the city’s Viinikanlahti web pages, and the public can send feedback to the city registry by email, quoting diary number TRE:4844/02.07.01/2025. City officials say comments received will be taken into account as the programme is finalised.

A public portfolio call for artwork has been opened for the Hatanpää tram stop on the planned Viinikanlahti tram extension artists sought for Hatanpää tram stop.
